How to Remove Wine Stains from Sheets

If you’ve ever unwound in bed with a glass of wine and a book or some Netflix, you may very well know the terrible feeling that overtakes your body when you accidentally slosh red wine onto your sheets. Well, try not to panic. Take these steps to remove wine stains from sheets instead:

  1. Strip any bedding you’ve spilled on.
  2. Mix one part dishwashing liquid with three parts hydrogen peroxide and apply the mixture to the stain. This will work as a presoak.
  3. Let that cleaning solution sit for a few minutes. You should be able to see the stain fading. If you don’t, add more solution. And keep an eye on your sheets, as so the solution works so it doesn’t bleach your bedding.
  4. After the stain has faded, wash your sheets and mattress pad just like you would on laundry day. When you pull the bedding out of the dryer, the stain should be gone.

How to Remove Wine Stains from Carpet

Carpeting is much harder to replace than sheets or clothes stained with wine, so you don’t want to let stains sit. Roll up your sleeves and do the following to get wine out of carpet (but only after you’ve checked your manufacturer’s cleaning instructions and done a spot test):

  1. Blot up as much of the stain as you can with an old towel or paper towels.
  2. In a spray bottle, mix two cups of warm water with one tablespoon of distilled white vinegar and another tablespoon of dishwashing liquid.
  3. Spray just a little bit of this cleaning solution at a time onto your carpeting. Blot the damp area with a dry towel afterwards and repeat this until the stain is lifted.
  4. Once the stain is gone, you’ll want to gently remove any leftover cleaning solution by adding cold water and blotting that up.

How to Remove Wine Stains from Clothes

Almost everyone has a DIY remedy they swear by for how to remove wine stains from clothes, from salt to club soda. The home remedy that we described above for sheets will definitely work on clothes. Here’s another you can try on sturdy fabrics like cotton:

  1. Stretch the wine-soaked area over a bowl.
  2. Pour boiling water through on the stain.
  3. Hang clothes to air dry or wash your clothes normally.

Keep in mind that before you use any type of stain treatment to get wine out of clothing, you’ll want to blot the stain first. The key word here is “blot.” Trying to scrub the stain out will only work it further into the fibers and make it harder to remove.
