4 Ways to Naturally Deodorize Kids’ Rooms

Let’s be honest. Children’s rooms can produce some not-so-pleasant aromas over time. As a parent, you probably wondered at least once, “what is going on in that room?” We don’t have the answer to that great mystery of life, but our cleaning pros at Merry Maids® are completely focused on providing solutions to keep your home smelling fresh and create that serene environment you need.

1. DIY Air & Carpet Fresheners

Store-bought air fresheners can make a room smell good, but at what cost? Some of the harsh chemicals found in your name-brand air fresheners and furniture sprays only mask smells but don’t eliminate them. Our team at Merry Maids likes to subscribe to more holistic remedies for odors to protect your home’s air quality and ensure no one has any allergic reactions.

Natural Room Air Freshener Spray

  • 10-20 drop of any essential oil

  • 1 tablespoon baking soda

  • 8 oz spray bottle

  • 1 ½ cups water

  1. Use a bowl to mix the baking soda and your drops of essential oils. We recommend using Eucalyptus as it helps clear nasal congestion and can reduce asthma symptoms.

  1. Pour your mixture into the spray bottle.

  1. Add in your water and shake well for 20-30 seconds.

  1. Lightly mist the room with the spray to help eliminate odors.

Natural Carpet Refresher

  • 1 cup baking soda

  • 1 tablespoon ground cinnamon

  • Shaker bottle or spice container

  1. Mix your baking soda and ground cinnamon well.

  1. Add your mixture to a shaker or an empty spice container with holes in the top.

  1. Sprinkle your new carpet refresher in your child’s room and let it sit for 30-60 minutes.

  1. Vacuum as usual, and make sure to remove any residue.

2. Keep Food Out

A smelly room isn’t always because of dirty clothes or bed sheets. If you notice your child sneaks off with snacks or smuggles in sugary drinks, the smelly culprit could be food. Make sure to check under beds, behind desks, and in dark spaces like closets where food could get stuck and forgotten about.

Even if you don’t find food in your child’s room, old stains or spills can linger and create a smelly environment. At that point, it’s time to start deodorizing and disinfecting. But how do you make the room smell better without spending an obscene amount on products? Use what you have in your home!

Here are some home-made options to remove food smells from your child’s bedroom:

  • Create a natural air freshener: Simmer a mixture of 1/2 cup of vinegar and 1/2 cup of water in a pot. Take a potholder in the room with you and set the pot down on a flat surface. This mixture will help neutralize odors instead of masking them.

  • Repurpose alcoholic beverages: Add three parts water, 10 drops of citrus oil, and one part vodka in a bowl, and mix them. Let the mixture sit in the room for a couple of hours to remove foul and musty odors.

3. Open the Windows

Letting in some fresh air might seem pretty straightforward, but it can make a world of difference in kids’ rooms. In fact, a report by the Consumer Product Safety Commission said that scientific evidence has emerged, indicating that the air within homes can be more seriously polluted than outdoor air. So, not only can you deodorize your child’s room, but you can also positively impact the air quality inside your home.

4. Let the Sun Be Your Dryer

The modern technology of machine dryers is nothing to balk at—unless they’re leaving your children’s clothes and bedsheets smelling terrible. When clothes sit too long in a dryer without being completely dry, they can start to grow mold and mildew, causing unpleasant odors that affect how a room smells. We recommend you go au naturel and let the sun do the work for you! Not only will you be doing your child’s room a favor, but you’ll also be helping the environment, saving on energy costs, and giving your clothes a longer life.
