Why Spring Clean

If you’re like many people, you grew up being told that an annual home deep cleaning was absolutely necessary each year in the spring time. But what is spring cleaning, and how did it originate?

Take a look at how spring cleaning began, then check out Merry Maids’ handy list that can help you tackle the task like a professional.

How Did Spring Cleaning Start?

Back before vacuums and humidifiers existed, spring cleaning took place after a long winter of having the house closed up. Think about it: Doors and windows were shut tight, and homes were heated by wood fireplaces

In addition, the cold weather made it hard to clean items that needed to be cared for outdoors, such as bedding or rugs. So, the spring thaw was the perfect time to throw open the windows and doors, let some fresh air in and scrub all the soot, ash, grit and grime from a home.

What is Spring Cleaning for in the Modern World?

Even with advances in heating and housekeeping, it’s likely you spend most of the winter with your home sealed up pretty tight — unless you live in a very warm climate, of course. Those who live in especially cold and snowy regions may even see an increase of dirt being tracked in via slush on boots, fallen leaves or pine needles and so forth.

And although homes have vents and filters now, it still seems like some special layers of winter grit seem to pile up over the colder months of the year. Additionally, spring is just a nice time to fling the windows wide and chase all the dust, dirt, sweater lint and musty winter smells out of your house, curtains and area rugs

So, even though modern living has eliminated the need for a lot of the home deep cleaning that took place back in the days of homesteaders and pioneers, many people still associate the season with a time to tidy their homes, spruce up their yards, purge the house of any negative winter vibes and — most of all — make a fresh start in terms of housekeeping.
